Returning to the Scene of the Original Wine Crime

August 1, 2011 matt 2 Comments

Caliza Winery is the first place we ever blogged on!  Well, actually it’s the first one we were bold enough to post on the outerwebs.  We did a few “flops” and then said “what the hell, go for it”!  Now, almost 400 posts later, we’ve drank a lot of wine, attended some incredible events, made some cool friendships, but most of all we’ve had a great time!

Turns out that Caliza was a fitting first blog for us, as we’ve become friends with owners Carl and Pam Bowker, and we’ve watched Caliza develop into one of the great wineries in the area.  Handcrafted wines, mostly Rhones and Rhone blends are made with a true passion for the art of winemaking.  You can taste that passion in the wines, and when you talk to them you can tell that their hearts are in what they do.

We tasted a GSM Rose with a hint of Primitivo in it that will end up making the perfect summer wine for us (we bought a few bottles), then into some rich and velvety reds.  There was a Syrah and some Rhone blends, all terrific in their own rights.   The coolest part of our tasting experience was that Carl was right there the whole time with us, talking about the wines, among other things.  That’s the charm of many small wineries around Paso Robles, you get to hang out and taste the wines with the actual person who made the wine!  He told us about some of his vineyard management practices, how he thins the fruit and develops the canopies.

As you might know…we love learning more about what goes on behind the bottles and Carl is a great source of info!  Thanks for another great wine experience, Caliza!  Cheers!
