While out at Poalillo Vineyards in Paso Robles, we got the wonderful opportunity of spending some time with Charlie Poalillo. He’s the one that started the whole Poalillo wine “thing” right up Vineyard Drive and they’re still running strong! So, it all started while Charlie was a photographer down in the Los Angeles area and used to come to Paso Robles to dabble in winemaking now and again, bottling his first vintage in 1969. Come 1973, after reading an article about some family that picked up and moved to follow their dreams, he asked his wife what she thought of selling everything and buying that vineyard in Paso Robles that they loved so much. Without hesitation, she said “Yes!” and the history was set. They had some rough years in the beginning; freezes, low yields, etc., but have pulled through to be one of the long-time wine producers here in the Paso Robles area.
Poalillo focuses on producing rich and deep Zinfandels, along with some Cabernet Sauvignon, and even a little Petite Sirah. The history is rich, the wines are too, and once you get out to Poalillo, you’ll definitely want to come back…after all, they’ve got the whole “Picture” out there!
We’ll let Charlie tell you all about it…
