Paso Robles Wine: Villa Creek Cellars

February 20, 2013 matt 2 Comments

A couple weeks back we headed out on the wine trail, imagine that. We ended up at Thacher (which we posted about on Monday) and finally made it out to Villa Creek Cellars. Villa Creek has been on our radar for some time for two reasons: 1.) when we’ve tried their wine at Villa Creek Restaurant we have really enjoyed them and, 2.) Cris and JoAnn Cherry (owners) are really cool folks.

So, here’s what we tasted:

2010 La Roda (50% Syrah, 50% Mourvedre) Denner Vineyard

2010 Avenger (60% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Grenache)

2010 Trovador (50% Bassetti Syrah, 50% Colombini Carignan)

2007 High Road, End Of The Road (50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre) James Berry Vineyard

Truthfully, there’s not much to say other than that these wines are amazing. I completely see why they get all the hype they get. The price points may be out of range for some folks (ranging from $45 to $100) but for those serious about wine and that can afford to have these in your collection, I strongly recommend.

After looking over their website one thing stood out to me, they say “All great wine begins with a passionate farmer”. I’ve chatted with many winemakers and vineyard managers and I really appreciate those people that believe this, understand it, and follow through with it. Here’s a link to their website page about the vineyards, and what amazing vineyards they are. Some of the vineyards they source from are organically farmed while others are sustainably farmed…which again goes to show passion and care from the farming side.

There you have it. Next time you’re in or around Paso Robles be sure to check out Villa Creek Cellars and while you’re at it, head downtown to Villa Creek Restaurant and hang out in their awesome bar. You never know, if it’s a Thursday night (date night) we might be in there too. Check out the video below, Annie’s at it again. Cheers folks!
