In Paso we have the east side versus the west side.
There’s the good wine versus the bad wine (this is typically the wine snobs mocking anything that people drink under $20).
Red versus white.
California versus everyone else.
Wine writers versus wine bloggers.
If you are at all involved in the wine industry/ business you know what I am talking about. Quite frankly, it’s a joke. It’s no different than any other subject in the world, if you don’t have anything nice to say than shut the f&%$ up. I simply don’t get it.
Sure, friendly conversation between people that are open minded and having a good time is one thing but for all the rest…let it go. Are you trying to intimidate people into believing your opinion or side? How is that going for you?
For all those that have had some snobby ass remark regarding the above “war of wine” scenarios (or other scenarios that I neglected to mention)…how many minds have you changed? I have seen heated exchanges online (mainly Facebook and Twitter), in blog posts and the comments on those blog posts, and in person; and I am absolutely baffled.
If people want to by Charles Shaw and drink the bird parts and spiders that are ‘supposedly’ put into it who cares? If you don’t like it don’t drink it. People that drink California Chardonnay (I do) are not bad people. People that buy Charles Shaw are not bad people. People that do the opposite of you in regards to wine are not bad people.
I’m down with you having your holier than thou attitude but I think myself, along with the rest of the world, would greatly appreciate it if you would just keep it to yourself. Is your life that miserable that you need to challenge wine writers or wine bloggers (depending on which side of the fence you lean)? Do you lack a certain happiness in life that leads you to bash those that drink buttery Chardonnay or $5.00 Pinot Noir?
It’s going to be okay. I promise you. Take a deep breath. Grab a glass of wine. Hang out with the family and friends you love. Then…just smile. In fact, laugh. Laugh out loud, loudly out loud. This life is so ridiculously short. There is no need to bash others for the opinions they have…ESPECIALLY OVER WINE. It’s wine for Christ’s sake. It’s the fermented juice of love. It represents good times, good food, and good people.

I’ve had a few friends ask me “What’s a good wine?” I usually say, whichever one you like! What do I know about wine anyway… I just drink what I like. I’ve had wine from $4.99 all the way up to $150 a bottle. To be quite honest, if I was given a blind tasting I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference in price or most likely varietal! It’s much to do about nothing, but everybody needs something to argue about, so I say let them argue. And I’ll just drink it and not think it. That’s my “wine” motto… Drink it, don’t think it. Or just shut the hell up…. Can’t we all just get along??????
Yes indeed Mo. Drink it don’t think it. I don’t understand all the desire to argue about these types of things…seems there’s more important stuff going on in the world.
I hosted many wine tastings and pairings when managing at a restaurant in San Diego. A common question was “What kind of wine is best?”. My answer was always the same: “Does it smell good? Does it taste good? That’s all you need to know. It’s simply what you like.”. People make wine into such a mystery. It’s all about personal taste and preference, not place of origin or price. Of course, having said that, I’d rather drink a nice Bella Luna Super Tuscan than something from the bottom shelf at Von’s:)
Well said Jim. Good points. I wish more people understood that. I’m not sure how wine has gotten to be so “elusive”…I can’t fathom that it’s because a handful of snobby wine writers or other egos. Who knows. Cheers to the wine adventure. 🙂
