The 3rd annual Beaverstock just took place on September 19th and 20th. This two day event is without question one of the more unique events along the central coast. The vibe alone makes it an event worth attending. Beaverstock is a down home, easy going, hippie-ish, family friendly music festival.
Something like 16 bands performed over the course of two days. It was a great mix of local up-and-coming bands along with a few more well-known musicians from outside the central coast. We went on Saturday and although the doors opened at noon we got there at roughly 2:30pm. During our 5 or 6 hours there we heard One Time Spaceman, The Bills, The California Honeydrops, and SambaDa between the two stages.
We spent a good chunk of our time in the kid’s area and Sammy had a blast. They had those plastic kiddie pools filled with sand (other with bird seed) and loaded with toys. In addition to that they had a Lego table, a fallen tree turned into a climbing jungle gym, bubbles, hula hoops, musical instruments for the kids to play, face painting, and more. Not only was this area fun and interactive…it was completely shaded which helped due to the heat.
There were food vendors like The Pairing Knife food truck, Higgies World BBQ, Fire and Wine Catering, and more. We shared a couple of pizzas which were fantastic. Our friends, Denise, and Christine, that came in from out of town to attend with us had some BBQ and that hit the spot as well. And don’t worry…we washed all of this down with wine (possibly some beer) and water…yes, water…have to stay hydrated on those warm Paso days.
The layout worked really well. I never felt too crowded even with the large areas dedicated to an Artist’s Lounge, yoga, and games. The space works well and for as warm as it was it could have been much worse. There are plenty of those famous Paso Robles oaks to shade you and that breeze kicks up later in the day. You know the one, the Templeton Gap breeze that the wine grapes also crave.
The only thing I haven’t mentioned yet is the people. Of course we ran into a bunch of friends but I also noticed complete strangers striking up conversation. I know I chatted with people in the kids are as well as the food court. Going back to the vibe, I think people just leave their issues, problems, and drama at the door and pick them up when they leave.
If you have not yet been to this event I strongly encourage you to check it out next year. It’s a must-attend event and it’s all for a good cause. In 2013 the proceeds went to benefit local charity, must! charities, and this year it went to TEF (Templeton Education Foundation). Good on the Castoro Cellars clan for putting on a great event like this for the music lovers, for giving back to the community as much as they do, and for doing such a great job organizing the event. Thank you!
