Another recent winery visited was Pomar Junction on the east side of Templeton on South El Pomar Road. This is one of those local wineries with so much history on the central coast that it’s really hard to cover all of it. However, Dana Merrill (owner), is a seventh generation Californian and lifelong farmer. His son, Matt, works alongside as General Manager.
Other notes of interest are their dedication to sustainability which they have proven with their SIP Certification through the Central Coast Vineyard Team. They were one of the first participants in this program. Their first vintage was in 2002 and they opened the tasting room in 2008. You can learn more here and here.
Let’s get to the wine. Here’s what we tasted:

2014 Muscat $25.00
2014 Syrah Rose $18.00
2013 Zinfandel $34.00
2012 Syrah $34.00
2013 Cabernet Sauvignon $34.00
Reserve Menu:
2013 Chardonnay $28.00
2014 Roussanne $28.00
2012 Pinot Noir Reserve $54.00
2013 Train Wreck (23% Merlot 18% Cabernet Sauvignon 18% Zinfandel 18% Petite Sirah 14% Syrah 9% Mourvedre) $48.00
2012 Tempranillo Reserve $54.00
2010 Amber Moonlight (Late Harvest Viognier) $20.00
The list is diverse which makes it nice for the different palates that come through the door. The ones that stuck out for us were the Syrah Rose, the 2013 Cab Sauv, Chardonnay, Roussanne, and the Train Wreck with its six different wines blended together.
Pomar Junction is one of those places where you feel far removed from all the busyness of life. It’s quiet (except when they are having one of their Train Wreck Friday live music parties) and surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards. We had Sammy with us that day and it was raining a bit but we still had fun running around outside and we took him into their train car to let him play around. A great spot to picnic, good wine, and solid customer service. Just another day in wine country!
