Annie and I recently made it back in to Caliza Winery for a tasting and it was well overdue. We are big fans, have been from the beginning. Funny side note, our very first blog post ever (back in January of 2010) was a video blog at Caliza.
Carl Bowker, owner and winemaker (along with his wife, Pam), is one of the most laid back folks you’ll find in Paso wine country. After every interaction I have with him I feel like I just meditated. Which is a good thing for my always-on brain.
Our friend Pam (another Pam, not his wife) poured for us and here’s what we tried:
2013 Sidekick (90% Roussanne 10% Viognier) $28.00
2014 Pink (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) $26.00
2012 Azimuth (36% Mourvedre 34% Grenache 30% Syrah) $54.00
2012 Companion (50% Cabernet Sauvignon 50% Syrah) $58.00
2013 Primitivo (90% Primitivo 10% Petite Sirah) $58.00
Amazing wines, as usual. Really loved the Sidekick, the Pink, and the Azimuth. This is one of those wineries that we always tell people to go to and we always have a bottle or two in our wine closet. Down to earth, good people, great wine, and beautiful scenery. Welcome to Paso.
Carl ended up in the tasting room and it was good catching up with him. Had a great time. You can learn more about Caliza on their website here. Click on “The Dirt” to learn about Carl’s journey to Paso Robles. It’s actually quite interesting. Cheers!
