A lullaby? Well, I listen to music almost all the time; it’s on in the car, all day at work, while working out, used for cooking inspiration, and often just as background ambiance while hanging out. Funny thing is, each circumstance can call for a different genre of music. I definitely don’t listen to the same kind of music when I’m cooking as I do when I’m working out. I tend to really dig alternative, hard rock while working out, and things like Andrea Bocelli or Josh Groban while cooking. As for work, mellow stuff that isn’t too distracting, but keeps me calm and focused usually does the trick.

Okay, all that said, I use Pandora a lot to fulfill a lot of these musical requirements that I have. As you may or may not know, Pandora is a musical genome project that learns your musical style and plays artists and songs that are similar to your favorites. In doing this, you get exposed to music that you may never have had the opportunity to listen to. Can you feel me getting closer to making my point here? I’m almost there…Pandora is where I found this song called “In My Arms” by the artist Plumb. It just popped up on one of my Pandora channels one day and I was hooked!

I heard this song years before I was ever pregnant, and it struck a cord somewhere in me that made me think of my baby boy. An imaginary baby boy, but MY baby boy. And that was that, a fleeting emotional attachment to a song about a baby boy that got to me. Fast forward to newly-pregnant me working away in my office with Pandora rolling along in the background. Suddenly, out of the blue, “In My Arms” comes on. It takes a minute for it to sink in, then tears are streaming down my cheeks, I’m all sniffly, and have become a snorty mess in my office, hoping that nobody comes to chat just right then.

I’ll let you read the lyrics and see if it grabs you at all, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. That’s just the magic of music, I guess…

  1. I think the words are awesome…didn’t care for the YouTube video. I guess I was expecting something different musically.  But I completely understand what you are saying about the music grabbing you and holding on even in the recesses of your mind/heart.  Love it when a song will come on “out of the blue” and take me back to a happy memory!

    •  @HeatherBrowneDearborn The Pandora version is a little better…but this live video was all I could find on YouTube. Yeah, funny how music can have such an emotional effect on you, sometimes when you don’t even realize it! I’ve got a few songs that take me right back to the exact scene, mood, smell, everything, when I hear it! Awesome!!!
