Prior to having Sammy there were 1,001 things Annie and I talked about as far as how we would handle certain situations. One of our BIG mantras was “the baby will become part of OUR life, not the other way around”. Well, Sammy is a couple of days away from being 3 months old and I can now report that this mantra becoming reality is only partially true.
I feel we have been able to keep up much of our life with him being here…we are still pretty social considering we have a baby, we still laugh a ton, we go places (not AS much, but not bad), and I don’t think we’re consuming less wine so it’s not all bad.
But here’s the deal…
I was just in the kitchen as Annie started preparing dinner (I am writing this Wednesday evening 1-9-13) and Sammy was dozing off to little, tiny, sweet, baby Booyah (that’s for Uncle Dave) land and what did I notice? Annie and I were tiptoeing around, whispering, and being ever so careful not to drop a dish or slam a cabinet door. SHIT!! Sorry Sammy, don’t cuss like your Daddy…do as he says not as he does. Anyways…one of the BIG things we talked about was having a noisy house and having him get use to lots of voices, music cranking, and corks being pulled on wine bottles.
I am ashamed to say…we are failing at this. When sleep starts to grip our precious little man we absolutely start shutting EVERYTHING down! Oh my gosh, he’s about to take a nap. That means we can actually have two available hands and do real adult shit (sorry again Sammy)…unplug the fridge, turn the TV down to volume 1, don’t talk to me, watch how heavily you’re breathing, and holy hell don’t even thinking about using the ice maker to make a cocktail!!!!
Okay, it’s not quite that bad but it’s still worse than what either of us was expecting. This little 14 or 30 pound baby Jesus has us by the short and curlies! Damn! No reason to be alarmed, we can’t win all the battles, right? I’m okay with it. It makes us feel good for now so we will give him this one. Parents 7, Sammy 4…WINNING!
All humor aside…what did NOT go the way YOU expected?!?!

LMAO! (Sorry, Sammy!) I remember you guys in the “planning” stages talking about how he would fit into your life and that you weren’t going to change things and I remember saying to myself – good luck to you! Babies do require changes. Some people make huge changes to their lifestyle and others make smaller adjustments. But I do want to congratulate you both – because you are still living your lives! Sammy loves car rides and being out in public and appears to be able to sleep anywhere. This means you can still go out and enjoy your activities or have people over to socialize and Sammy is good. And if you quiet the house down some when he takes a nap or goes to bed so you have two hands to work with, well that’s all good, too! And sometimes, you just might use those quiet moments to share a glass of wine with each other and reflect on the miracle that is your little family! Love you 3!!!

@HeatherBrowneDearborn Certainly been interesting Heather. I feel we’ve balanced it all pretty well. I feel like we quiet things down when he naps more now than before…when he falls asleep we both feel relieved because we can act like normal humans with two hands…imagine that, being productive with TWO hands. LOL

Mine didn’t sleep through the night until he was nine months old, and even after that he was inconsistent! Definitely did not expect that. BUT he would sleep through a NYE party, so we decided to keep him anyway. 😉

@AnnieInRGB Hey there Annie…we feel so freaking lucky. I’m not sure what the answer is but our little dude does really good through the night. He will sleep any where from 4 to 8 hours straight…average is about 6. The cool thing though is that when he wakes up we can feed him and he will sleep again for an hour or 3! Lucky luck lucky!
