I have been toying with the idea of using my life as an experiment. I’m 33 years old and have been in the same industry for roughly 8 years; and I’m ready for something new. I don’t necessarily want to completely leave the industry I’m in, but I would like to change the position I have in it. There are also a few other new things I would like to venture in to.
My industry: my main business is a house painting company that I define as quite successful for the following reasons. 1) I have lived in my area for six years but only had my company for three years yet I have a large, quality customer base 2) in this down economy, and as a relative newcomer, I have more work than painting contractors that have been here for 10 and 20 years and 3) referrals have been 90% plus of my business.
What I want to be able to do is help others (consult, advise) in the trades to grow their businesses. Through networking (and knowing how to network) and social media, I know there are many options to contractors that did not exist before.
There lies the issue, if I allow it to be. At 33 years old does it make sense to risk shifting my focus from this business to a new business? Yes, it does. Why? Because life is too short, you need to spend it being happy and the biggest part of being happy (other than family and friends) is to do something for a living that you are passionate about. So, here we go! Go big or go home!!

Great entry Matt! And you know, I at 47 yrs old feel the same way. I have been speaking to some of my sub-contractors and they are definitely interested in what you and I have been discussing. Let’s get it going!
