I am typically not the kind of person that would over analyze a word, but I’ve been struggling with the term “social media”, specifically the “media” portion of that term. I understand, by definition, that media could definitely include social sites but whether you are an individual or a business I like the term social networking far more.
Media just has such a stigma attached to it now, and beyond that; we are being social and we are networking when we are on these social sites. Again, whether you’re an individual or a business (and using these tools properly) you aren’t media. You are networking socially to relate and converse with others and be part of the overall conversation.
Right or wrong, I like the meaning behind social networking much more than social media. Any thoughts?

Hey Matthew,
Didn’t know your blog, but saw your tweet about a minute ago.
The joys of social media, uhh, social networking… the social web?
I agree with you. Social media is a bit confusing. In my experience, when you say ‘social media’ people think ‘Facebook’.
I like to work with splitting ‘Social’ into three parts: social networks, social media, social web.
Slide 4 of this presentation: http://michielgaasterland.blogspot.com/2010/01/b2b-services-communication-on-social.html
has a pretty good overview I think.
Best,

Michiel, thanks for the comment. As I said in the blog post, I just struggle with calling the concept of networking, “media”. Media is media, but the idea behind social networking is the idea of caring, being interested in, and being a part of the overall conversation (not just spreading your message). Media, in my mind, tends to be marekting as the focus rather than being part of something bigger. You make good points and I will check out your blog as well. Have a good one!
