The Lost Art Of Accountability

June 16, 2010 matt 482 Comments

We are in danger of living in a world with no accountability. Even when people get caught doing or saying something it is all about denial. We live in a finger pointing, shit talking society and we each see it every single day. My side is this; good or bad, take responsibility for your actions and the words that come out of your mouth. My belief is that by doing this, you’ll have a better reputation at the end of the day.

I’ve heard and seen people do some crazy stuff, but they stepped up and handled their business; in turn, they often times become more respected. On the other hand, we’ve all seen people that deny and hide, which leads to being a topic of conversation longer (example: Tiger Woods).

If I say something horrible, I fear what others will think or do; but the best thing to do is confront that issue as soon as possible and address those whom I have “affected”. You won’t always win, but we do live in a forgiving and compassionate society; more often than not the road will be smoother when we take accountability for our words and actions.

I agree completely, Matthew. People holding themselves accountable is all to infrequent, especially among our more visible leaders. It seems like deniability is the theme.
