I CrossFit because it works for me and makes me feel great. It&#8217;s constantly varied, always challenging, and serves my competitive needs. I don&#8217;t compete, I don&#8217;t wear knee socks, and I can&#8217;t do a pull-up unassisted, but I still claim myself as a CrossFitter. Yeah, there are a lot of people that do CrossFit that get pretty intense about it! It&#8217;s cult-like in nature, just because of the mindset and intensity&#8230;and it can really draw a person in. I&#8217;ve heard many stories of people whose lives have been transformed by their new-found addiction to CrossFit. Cool? I think so. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But, what this means is for every person that loves CrossFit, there&#8217;s a critic out there. I&#8217;ll get into why people think they need to be critical in the first place later, but for now I want to address the two major criticisms that I see of CrossFit:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It&#8217;s not a real sport<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; People get hurt too easily<\/p>\n<p>Okay, let&#8217;s discuss&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; CrossFit isn&#8217;t a real sport: who ever said it had to be??? Sure, baseball and football are cool and all, but is riding the elliptical and doing a Zoomba class at the gym considered a sport? Not last time I looked, but nobody&#8217;s making fun of ellipticals. I&#8217;ve seen and heard discussions where people call it &#8220;CrossShit&#8221; and say that we&#8217;re training for a non-existent goal. If training for a goal of being healthy and fit isn&#8217;t enough, then I don&#8217;t know what is! If curling can be in the Olympics, then CrossFit can be a sport! Now, go mind your own business and stop worrying about what is and isn&#8217;t a sport!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; People get hurt too easily: I think probably the biggest criticism that I&#8217;ve heard is that in CrossFit there isn&#8217;t enough training on form and personal attention by trainers, leading to injury. As far as I&#8217;m concerned, this goes back to personal accountability. I know my body, I know what I can and can&#8217;t do, and it&#8217;s my job to pay attention to that. If I don&#8217;t know how to do a deadlift properly, I&#8217;m not going to just go and grab a heavy bar and start hauling weight! That would be stupid! And if I go check out a CrossFit box and the trainers aren&#8217;t into showing proper form, then I&#8217;m going to go find a box where the trainers do! It&#8217;s my responsibility to take care of my body, not anybody else&#8217;s! Oh, and by the way&#8230;those are likely the same people that go to the gym, load up a bench press bar too heavy and then proceed to lift it without asking for a spotter.<\/p>\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the moral of this story? It&#8217;s that no matter what you do, there will always be critics. It&#8217;s human nature to want to put down things that we either don&#8217;t understand or feel less than. It&#8217;s okay&#8230;let them criticize and put CrossFit down; at least you&#8217;re out there doing it, right???
