I received this press release (copy and pasted below) from marketing company, Parker Sanpei<\/a>, this morning and was happy to see the inclusion of some small producers to attend the CAB Collective this year<\/a>. The four chosen are Clos Solene<\/a>, The Farm<\/a>, Falcone<\/a>, and L\u2019Aventure<\/a>. We are familiar with each of these except Falcone so hope to check them out at some point. The other three make fantastic wines.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i>April 9, 2014\u00a0(Paso Robles, Calif) \u2013 The\u00a0Paso Robles CAB\u00a0<\/b>(Cabernet and Bordeaux)\u00a0Collective<\/b>\u00a0(PRCC) has invited four top-tier\u00a0Garagiste wine producers<\/b>\u00a0to share the spotlight at the\u00a0CABs of Distinction Gala<\/b>\u00a0on\u00a0Saturday, April 26.<\/b>\u00a0The ultra-premium small-lot wineries \u2014Clos Solene, Falcone, The Farm and L\u2019Aventure\u00a0<\/b>\u2014 are celebrated for producing high quality, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon and red Bordeaux varietals.<\/p>\n

Pronounced\u00a0gare-ah-jeest<\/i>, the term \u201cGaragiste\u201d\u00a0was originally used in the Bordeaux region of France to denigrate renegade small-lot wine makers, many of whom made wine out of their garage. The term has since evolved to include a group of boutique winery producers who strive to produce impeccable artisanal wines with an emphasis on innovative growing and winemaking techniques.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to the production of age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals, it\u2019s important to showcase all of the talent within Paso Robles,\u201d said\u00a0PRCC Board Member Cynthia Lohr, owner and VP Marketing, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines.\u00a0<\/b>\u201cThe Garagiste wineries bring a spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship and excitement to the mix. When you look at the Paso Robles community, we really have such a broad basis in our membership, from established wineries to boutique efforts. What the Garagiste producers in Paso Robles are doing is representative of a track within the wine industry \u2014 as well as with the consumer \u2014 to be hands-on and to elevate the best of the land and the fruit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The CABs of Distinction Grand Tasting Gala<\/b>\u00a0will be held at\u00a0River Oaks Hot Springs in Paso Robles<\/b>\u00a0and will include tastings of 32 wineries (28 member wineries along with the four Garagiste producers), each thoughtfully paired with\u00a0artisanal cheese or\u00a0charcuterie.<\/b>Admission includes a decadent catered luncheon provided by notable Paso Robles restaurants and caterers (Robert\u2019s Restaurant, Crush Catering and Avant-Garde Experience<\/b>),\u00a0chocolate tastings, live music, a barrel-making demonstration\u00a0<\/b>and more.<\/p>\n

About the Garagiste Wineries<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Clos Solene Winery<\/b><\/a>\u00a0proprietor and winemaker\u00a0Guillaume Fabre<\/b>\u00a0hails from Bordeaux, France, but he now spends his days handcrafting robust, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon at his Paso Robles vineyard, which offers up a comparable terroir. Although Clos Solene produces just 700 cases per year, the award-winning winery has caught the attention of\u00a0Wine Spectator\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0The San Francisco Chronicle\u00a0<\/i>among other notable press.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are doing incredible things with Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles,\u201d said Fabre. \u201cOver the past ten years, Paso Robles Garagiste producers are using different clones, different root stocks and different vineyard techniques that make the wine highly desirable.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u2019Aventure Winery<\/b><\/a>\u00a0is owned and operated by winemaker Stephan Asseo, a fellow French transplant who sought incredible terroir as well as the freedom to break with staunch winemaking tradition. After working for years in Bordeaux and Burgundy, he took the leap to Paso Robles, where winemaking \u201crules\u201d are meant to be broken.<\/p>\n

Known for his inventive blends, Asseo only produces varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wine when the grapes are at optimal quality. The winery will pour its sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon Cuv\u00e9e at the upcoming CABs of Distinction Gala.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we only produce Cabernet every other year, my father loves to showcase the varietal,\u201d said\u00a0L\u2019Aventure Sales, Marketing and Communications Director, Chloe Asseo.<\/b>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re so happy the PRCC is out there showing people that there is great Cab not only in Napa, but in Paso Robles. Most small producers of Cabernet Sauvignon lack the opportunity to showcase what they do, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to promote the varietal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helen and John Falcone<\/b>\u00a0of\u00a0Falcone Family Vineyards<\/b><\/a>\u00a0worked for decades within the Napa Valley wine industry before setting down roots in Paso Robles soil. John, a former winemaker for Atlas Peak Vineyards and Helen, former assistant winemaker at Chimney Rock Winery, are known for producing limited amounts of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon through their Falcone Family Vineyards label, which has garnered praise from\u00a0Wine Enthusiast<\/i>, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur wines have received very good reviews wherever we take them,\u201d said Helen Falcone. \u201cLike many Garagiste producers, we don\u2019t have a tasting room and our production is quite small, so it\u2019s very important to participate in events offered by the PRCC. Being part of the CABs of Distinction Gala event brings us face-to-face with consumers, which is incredibly effective.\u201d<\/p>\n

Located in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles,\u00a0The Farm Winery<\/b><\/a>\u00a0boasts some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards located on the Westside.\u00a0The Farm Winery owners Azmina and Jim Madsen<\/b>\u00a0are proud of their 700-case-per-year output; Over just two vintages, the winery\u2019s Cabernet Sauvignon has received 15 scores of 92 points or higher.<\/p>\n

Jim Madsen underscored the fact that many Garagiste wines can only be found on reserve wine lists at high-end local restaurants. Like many of his fellow renegade winemakers, Madsen thinks of the small production wines as \u201cjewels.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGaragiste producers create highly sought-out wines,\u201d said Jim Madsen. \u201cWe hope The Farm Winery can bring a small push towards contributing to the reputation of Paso Robles as being a special place for Cabernet Sauvignon.\u201d<\/p>\n
