"change"Annie and I, as usual, have been talking a lot recently but the talk has been different. Like many of you we talk a lot about goals, what we want to do with our lives, and so on but the unfortunate thing is that much of the time it seems or feels like it ends with the talk. After all, even having those conversations feels like a big accomplishment because our goals are so awesome and amazing. Problem is, I was starting to feel disconnected from life…not from Annie or Sammy…just from the concept of life.

That feeling of being disconnected has happened a lot in my life and I have learned it’s because I want more out of this time here. I want to do bigger things. I want to be fulfilled. When I feel that disconnect it means it’s time for a new chapter. That disconnect usually means I have hit a rut and that routine has sunk its evil claws into me yet again.

Annie and I are going to start mapping out things we want to do. We will do this visually using a whiteboard, that big poster board paper, post-its, and journals. The goal is to basically audit our life as it is and see what we want to change, improve, add, or get rid of. By defining our goals and ideas we can then set a clearer course of action. In a sense, it’s like Spring cleaning. We want to de-clutter our minds and focus in on what really matters to us.

Each goal or idea that makes it on to this map then needs to be defined further. What actionable steps will happen to deliver the results? An example is that Annie wants us eating even healthier than we already are. The problem though is that saying you want to eat healthier does not give any actionable steps so Annie mapped out what that means and thoroughly defined it. Now that we can visually see it on paper it becomes much easier to accomplish and it reinforces those goals to yourself.

We are now going to do this with each aspect of our lives with the end goal being that this will clear our minds, set us on a specific path, and make us more effective and efficient in accomplishing the things we want to accomplish.

I feel like most of us are wandering through this life with no clear direction. We all talk up a big game but rarely follow through with action. It’s important to me that I live a life with purpose and strive toward fulfillment. This process of visually mapping things out will help my often chaotic brain start dialing in on the follow through. I believe it will also make me a better husband and father because having a clearly defined map of what I want those relationships to look like will serve as a tool to hold me accountable.

Have you ever done something like this? Do you ever feel lost, stuck in a rut, or in a mental fog? Do you think this would help you?
