Having a baby is hard work. I think we all know that and understand it but it\u2019s just something I\u2019d rather not focus on. Instead I\u2019d like to focus on those things that happen that get you all excited about being a parent like the first time they look up at you, the first smile, or the first time they laugh. We\u2019ve had all these firsts but in the last week we had a bunch more.<\/p>\n

A week ago Sunday (March 31) Sammy started turning over all the time. Now, it wasn\u2019t his first time but it became a consistent thing as of this date. Yesterday (April 8) he slept on his stomach for the first time and what was more surprising is that he slept like that for about an hour and a half to two hours. He also sat in his high chair for the first time and had rice cereal for the first time. It\u2019s been in the past week that we would start sitting him up in a little chair with a tray and he would hold his head up pretty well\u2026so the high chair was the next step.<\/p>\n

This also led to some very successful steps this past week of him holding his own bottle!! FREEDOM!! Just kidding, but not really. When a child can start feeding themselves you start getting to use your hands again which is pretty cool.<\/p>\n

Yesterday (April 8) was also his six month check up even though he will officially be six months this coming Friday. He weighed in at 16 pounds and 14 ounces and was 27.25 inches tall. The doctor said everything looked great and that Sammy is doing well. We love hearing that!<\/p>\n

This world of firsts we only get one time and we\u2019re trying to enjoy the heck out of it. Sure there are some stages that are more fun than the rest but being able to see this world through the eyes of a baby and witness their process is a pretty amazing thing. Annie and I are still beyond happy with our decision to only have one child but it does remind us that we\u2019re only getting these experiences one time and so we must make the attempt to enjoy all of it, even the stuff that doesn\u2019t smell so great (literally and figuratively).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting how watching Sammy\u2019s world of firsts has brought me to a world of firsts. Some of my firsts are choosing to set work aside and be with him, learning to let go, relearning to look at things through another\u2019s eyes, playing with a baby is really fun, laughing with a baby is even more fun, there\u2019s nothing quite like your son touching your face or rubbing your hand, life is short, life goes by faster than I thought, and I know now more than ever before what family really is.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of this post I said having a baby is hard work, it is for sure. The issue I have is listening to people b^%&h and complain about it. I\u2019m not talking about the venting process but I am talking about those parents that only seem to have bad things to say about their kids or about the parenting. Why did you have sex then??<\/p>\n

These are amazing moments and we are shaping these little mini human baby people. And as much as we are teaching them, if you open your mind they are teaching us just as much. Enjoy all these moments\u2026the good, the bad, and slimy ones. It\u2019ll be gone before you know it and as you look back from your death bed you\u2019ll wish you could do it all again.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the tale of the tape for Sammy in these first 6 months:<\/p>\n

Sammy was born on October 12, 2012: 7 pounds 11 ounces \/ 19.5 inches tall<\/p>\n

At 24 days old (November 5, 2012: 9 pounds 13 ounces \/ 21.5 inches tall<\/p>\n

At 17 weeks old (February 11, 2013): 15 pounds 5 ounces \/ 26 inches tall<\/p>\n
