\"Sammy\"<\/a>As you probably know, Little Browne’s real name is Samuel. Samuel Liberty, in fact. The middle name Liberty has been in the family since 1776, so we thought we’d honor tradition and carry it on, but that’s another story. This story is about my curiosity around names and nicknames. For me, names not only make their mark with how they sound, but also with the feeling that comes across when you say or hear the name. Samuel, to me, is a strong, classic, pleasant name that’s easy to pronounce and spell (so people won’t screw it up). To me, it’s fits our son (not that he’s all that classy just yet, but he’s definitely pleasant most of the time). <\/p>\n

Our Nicknames for Samuel<\/h3>\n

Now, we went to all that trouble to decide on a name for our little man, and then we proceed to come up with any number of nicknames to call him on a regular basis. We call him Sammy a lot of the time, but here are a few others that I use in no particular order:
\n– Samma-Lam (Nice rhyme)
\n– Boogaloo (I think ‘they’ used to call me this when I was little)
\n– Pumpkin (Seemed fitting for a kid that was all noggin when born)
\n– Pumpkin Head (Bad spinoff from the above)
\n– Lou (Possibly short for Boogaloo, but not sure)
\n– Boogs (I’d like to think another spinoff from Boogaloo, but it may or may not be directly related to boogers)
\n– Buddy (Seems standard for a boy-child HGH<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The funny thing is, he’ll respond to most if not all of those, but when we tried calling him Samuel, he looked around the room for who the hell that might be.<\/p>\n

Seriously, what’s the deal with nicknames??? I don’t have nicknames for people at work, or people at our favorite restaurants. I have nicknames for my kid, my hubby, and some of my really close friends. This makes me think that we give nicknames to those we feel really close and affectionate towards…but what about my Mom? I just call her Mom, maybe that’s the literal mother of all nicknames?<\/p>\n

Maybe it’s because we spend so much time around some people that we have to spice things up by calling them some funny\/lovey\/goofy name instead of their actual real name to break up the monotony. I can’t imagine how tired I’d be of the name “Samuel” if that’s the only name I used for him for the next 18 years.<\/p>\n

I don’t know…maybe it’s just that we, as humans, have many ways of showing love and affection and giving somebody a nickname lets them know that you feel just that comfortable, that enamored, that in love. Meeting Sammy has immersed me into a whole different type of love and affection than I’ve ever known and I think that kid deserves some kickass nicknames, if I do say so myself! I have to say, I’m looking forward to developing more as he grows up, I’m sure he’ll appreciate that!!!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
