We have been very specific about certain things we want to instill in Sammy and a sense of entitlement is NOT one of them. Not to say that learning about Christmas means your kid will have an entitlement complex, but we just really want to focus on the spirit of the season and not on the materialistic part.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>How do parents do that without taking away some of the joy and excitement? That&#8217;s the million dollar question! As Sammy watches more and more Christmas movies and cartoons, he&#8217;s started to say things like &#8220;Christmas present, Sammy&#8221; and &#8220;Santa coming&#8221; with a huge smile on his face and a proud look in his eyes. How do we teach him that Christmas is all about giving, spending time with family and friends, and getting into the spirit of joy and full-hearts and it&#8217;s not all about how many presents you get?<\/p>\n<p>Our current approach is, like I mentioned before, focus on the magic and not all the gifts. Sure, we&#8217;ll get him some gifts, but we&#8217;ll also talk to him about sharing, giving, and the magic of making others feel special. He&#8217;s still a little young, but we&#8217;ve agreed that instead of mindlessly hopping on the shopping\/buying\/wrapping\/presents crazy train, that we&#8217;ll talk about how much we enjoy spending time together, seeing the lights and the warmth, and spending time with the people we love.<\/p>\n<p>As he gets older, we&#8217;ll donate gifts, time, food, etc to those in need. We&#8217;ll go through his toys and donate the ones he doesn&#8217;t play with anymore to kids that don&#8217;t have as many toys. Maybe we&#8217;ll take him to visit some elderly homes where people don&#8217;t get many visitors during the Holidays.
