What’s Your Label?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I am pregnant. I am 40 years old. I am obviously a female. These are some of my more recent labels (except the female part, that’s always been there). Being 40 and 5ish months pregnant means that this is a pretty new label for me…and the 40 part is about 6 months new, so you get the idea. What does all of this mean? Well, what it means is that we like to label people. When I say “we” I mean doctors\/teachers\/employers\/society\/humans. It’s what we do. It makes us more comfortable when we can classify people into comfy little boxes that take away the unknown or any mystery or uniqueness. The funny thing about being a 40-year old pregnant chick for me, personally is that I’m not a fan of the traditional descriptors that come along with the specific labels. Why do we let ourselves get pigeon-holed???<\/p>\n

I’m talking about descriptors like this:<\/p>\n

– Pregnant: hormonal, feeble, slow, awkward, large, delicate, fragile
\n– 40 years old: OLD, douty, forgetful, past prime, slow, weathered
\n– Female: emotional, bitchy, weak, passive, docile<\/div>\n

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve come across some lovely ladies that fit nicely into these descriptions, but I don’t fancy myself one of them, pretty much in any way. Sure, I have my moments, but I like to think of myself and many other women I know more like this:<\/p>\n

– Pregnant: beautiful, capable, strong, instinctive
\n– 40 years old: YOUNG, vibrant, just getting started, experienced, seasoned, self-assured
\n– Female: powerful, intelligent, direct, vital, sassy, nurturing<\/div>\n

Why is it that we put all of these labels on people? And, what’s more important, why do people accept the labels that have been put on them??? If you’re a female, who says that you can’t be strong, vibrant, outspoken, and revered? Who says that you can’t ride dirtbikes, jump out of planes, or kick some proverbial ass? You’re the only one who’s stopping you from being everything that you’ve ever strived to be.<\/p>\n

Now, I have two questions for you:<\/p>\n

1. What are your labels?
