I stopped getting things for people on their birthday a while back\u2026as in at least a couple of years if not longer. Come to think of it I haven\u2019t done Christmas presents for people either\u2026not even my wife. My only exception is young kids, I dig doing things for them.<\/p>\n

Here are my reasons why I gave up gifts:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s a waste of time (as in the time it takes to pick out a gift and all that)<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s a waste of money (we\u2019re not all rich)<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You don\u2019t need more crap on a shelf<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This country thrives on over consumption and over commercialization, I do not want to take part as much as I can help it<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A \u201cthing\u201d, in my opinion, does not show you that I care about you<\/p>\n

6)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I realized that spending time with you is more important so I\u2019d rather hang out and open a good bottle of wine or something<\/p>\n

7)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t want anything from you<\/p>\n

8)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the case of my wife and I we don\u2019t get each other \u201cstuff\u201d because we don\u2019t want \u201cstuff\u201d, but when there is something we actually want or need we get it\u2026we don\u2019t wait for a birthday or holiday<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s it\u2026that\u2019s my list. I will admit that not getting gifts also fits into my idea of attempting to live as minimally as possible too. Time and money are precious things. Spending both of those things toward getting someone a \u201cthing\u201d just doesn\u2019t seem like life well spent. Go hang out with the people you care about or shoot them an email or something. It\u2019s also a greener way to live.<\/p>\n
