Summer Drinks – Let's Make a Deal!

May 21, 2012 matt 10 Comments

Summer is upon us, at least here in Paso Robles, CA. The days are warming and the evenings are longer. The mosquitos are out and people are BBQ’ing. You can hear the kids playing well into the dusk and the tank tops and shorts are coming out. All the indicators are in place…and as most of us drinkers know, it’s time to break out the cool summer drinks.

What are the Standard Summer Drinks?

Well, you have your microbrew summer ales and wheats, you’ve also got your chilled, crisp white wines, not to mention rose’s. Don’t forget all your typical cocktails; the mojitos, spritzers, blended fru-fru drinks, and mixologist specials. It’s hot out there, the scent of suntan lotion is in the air and people are trying to cool off however they can.

Let’s Make a Deal

We’ve got a deal for you…tell us your best and most original summer drink quencher and we’ll pick the most interesting and unique ones to try. Just don’t get too exotic on the ingredients…after all, we live in a small town! Now, get out there and let’s get refreshed!!!

Agua fresca de jamaica with vodka or rum – sweetened hibiscus tea is so yummy – and incredibly easy to make. You should be able to find the dried jamaica/hibiscus flowers in your area 🙂 I’m thinking there are probably other spirits that would work as well, but I like to stick with vodka, myself. I’ve see a margarita recipe but I haven’t ventured to the tequila yet. Cheers!

That sounds awesome, Angela! We’ll put it on the list and let you know how it goes….I love Agua de Jamaica, so I’m sure vodka would only make it better! Maybe gin…?

My current favorite is vodka, St. Germain (or I use an organic elderflower liquer), lemon juice, thyme (optional), and seltzer. I also love campari and soda with orange or fresh lime juice margaritas.

Our summer fav – in addition to wine – is a Firefly. Take a tall glass – add lots of ice which isnecessary here in the TX heat! Add about 2 oz of vodka, then add pink grapfruit jiuce almost to the top, leaving room for about 2 ounces of grenadine to top it off. Stir slightly and then enjoy either under an outdoor ceiling fan or in an air conditioned space!

Nice one April!! Where in TX are you? I use to live in San Antonio and my sis lives in Ft. Worth. Anyways, good drink idea…I’m good with anything that has Vodka in it, almost! 🙂

A Double Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Wiskey on the rocks sounds pretty good to me right now! LOL!!

I enjoy my Scotch Duncan…it’s definitely a summer evening drink for me, when it’s cooled down a little bit. We’ll have to have a glass together one of these days!!

Indeed, summer’s fast approaching. And as always, my choice would be a refreshing hibiscus tea, and an amazingly turmeric tea!
