Cheese and Wine: The Perfect Pair

May 7, 2014 matt 2 Comments

It is inevitable in our house that a cheese plate will be put out when friends come over…heck, there are times when a plate of cheese and crackers will be dinner for the two of us. Let’s not forget the wine because, you know, that’s what we do. There’s something very social, customary, and even romantic about wine and cheese.

When I see a table that has a bottle (or seven) of wine and an amazing cheese spread I think of friends and laughter. The other thing I think of is that I have no clue how to pair wine and cheese. It’s always nice to be able to consult a friend that has the knowledge or be able to find a handy dandy wine and cheese pairing chart.

The last thing you want to do is set out the wrong pairing…trust me. We had an incident a few years back where we ordered a cheese plate with our wine. Apparently the person behind the counter didn’t have wine and cheese knowledge and obviously we didn’t either. The wine was tasting quite good but one of the cheeses on the plate made the wine taste like it was bad. Actually, it was beyond bad…it was a huge turn off.

The takeaway is this, if you don’t know much about pairing wine and cheese proceed with caution. Get the necessary information and protect your wine from the same fate we encountered. The chart below may be of some use to you…check it out!

David, me too. We have a few really good cheese shops locally as well as a couple of women that go around and make pairings for events, etc. That is something Paso was lacking a few years ago.
