Our Three Favorite Wines from January

February 4, 2013 matt 12 Comments

Annie and I were chatting recently about how we should start doing a blog post at the beginning of each month about our favorite wines from the previous month. I will list my top 3 and Annie will list hers, the point of this exercise is to partially keep better tabs on the wines we have as well as spread word of our favorites in case you haven’t tried them. We decided to limit it to the top 3 for each of us because it forces us to focus in on the wines that really grabbed our taste buds.

We’re fortunate enough to go through many incredible wines each month, mostly from the Paso Robles/ San Luis Obispo County area, but also a handful of others. When I started thinking about my choices for the month of January I realized how tough it would be to pick just 3 but here we go…

Matt’s Top 3 Wines from January 2013 (in no particular order):

1) 2009 Pear Valley Inspiration (59% Syrah, 32% Grenache, 9% Mourvedre)

2) 2008 De Tierra Pinot Noir (Silacci Vineyard/ Monterey)

3) 2010 Ambyth Estate Priscus (57% Grenache Blanc, 20% Viognier, 14% Marsanne)

Annie’s Top 3 Wines from January 2013 (in no particular order):

1) 2010 Ambyth Estate Priscus (57% Grenache Blanc, 20% Viognier, 14% Marsanne)

2) Barton “E Street” Tempranillo

3) 2010 Bodega de Edgar, Albariño/Chardonnay/Roussanne/Viognier “La Güera”

So there you have it. Certainly some interesting wines in January, in fact, all three of my (Matt’s) picks I had not had before. So what were your favorite wines from January?

That is so cool, I love the pictures of the wine . My favorite is:
    1. South Coast Winery/’09 Chardonnay Sans Chene-without oak, it taste like Savi Blanc. It was on sale at Stater Bros for $9.72 I went online to South Coast winery and their price is $15, $12, so I got a good deal. Drinking a glass right now.
    2. 14 Hands/Hot to Trot-red blend (Target on sale $8.99).
    3. Gary King Winery-Petite Syrah ($15.00)
    4. La Crema-Pinot Noir ($15.00)

I should, but I don’t, I need to get more organized like you.
I only have a notebook on my wine clubs each month, but it got to big, so I purged most of it, need to make a list on the computer (paperless). lol
Have you tried Toucan Wines, Arroyo Grande area? I am trying to get them to come to Vinatero’s Wine Bar in uptown Whittier for a tasting, waiting to hear back, they will be in Manhatten Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Monrovia, so I wanted a little bit closer to home, although they are not that far. I just don’t like to drink and drive, from that distance.

I totally understand that drink and drive thing Bev, not worth it. I have had Toucan Wines before, been a while though. Doug Timewell is the guy behind it correct?

Yes Doug Timewell is his name, since I Freelance and I love networking to help out wineries I took the intuitive to make him more business. As you know I eventually would love to work in the wine industry even if it’s pouring wine, love it and socializing with wine lovers. I haven’t tried his wine yet but I would love to met him and taste his wine. If he doesn’t get the chance to go to VInatero’s I will make it to one of his tastings in L.A.. If you and Annie do venture out to his area tell him Hi for me. Cheers! 🙂

Awesome Bev, I will. Just keep at it, I am sure you will find something in the wine business. There are plenty of different types of fun jobs for sure. As for the radio thing…are you sure? We don’t advertise or anything…what did they say?

Great idea! I might try to do likewise. For a few years I did “wines of the year” posts, but I haven’t been organized enough along the way recently (good news is I wind up enjoy quite a few very good wines in the course of the year!).

I have been really looking for something about this subject and your writing perfectly matches my current requirements. Will you please write more along these lines? Viewers are looking for this knowledge as well as the type of unbiased opinion that you bring to the table.
