What Alcohol Goes Well With a Cold?

February 13, 2013 matt 1 Comment

I posed this question on our Hoot n Annie Facebook page and proceeded to get 112 comments (this included my comments in response to everyone) on what alcohol concoction would cure the common cold. I must say, I was impressed with the range of cocktails that people came up with but it seemed that whiskey was definitely a favorite. Some people were mixing it with other things while some people said to just take it straight. I’m sure all the whiskey companies in the world can now start marketing their booze as “the cure for the common cold”…I know I would!

So let’s see what everyone had to say. And if you have a concoction that isn’t listed let me know!

Lisa Pretty- Gin with lots of lemon

Tim Spencer- Hot toddy made with Jack Daniels

Susanne Genovese- Tuaca

Thea Dwelle- 3 oz. of whiskey poured over 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, 4 cloves, juice of ½ a lemon, star anise if you have it, fill mug with hot water & stir with cinnamon stick

Angela Stone- Shot of Tequila with the juice of ½ a lemon, some honey, and filled with hot water

Senor Sanchos restaurant- Cognac

Sarah Leigh McFall- Hot toddy made with a good single malt, teaspoon of honey, squeeze of lemon juice, and top it off with hot water

Steven Dooner- Irish Whiskey

Kim Jones- Whiskey or good Brandy

Bob Shirey- Jack Daniels straight up before bed

Natale Koch- Tusin (as in Robutusin, from the Chris Rock comedy skit)

Mackenzie Britton- Dr. McGillicuddy’s

Heather Browne Dearborn- Whiskey, honey, and lemon

Beverly Aselson- Grapefruit seed extract, put 10 drops in your water, juice, coffee, or tea three times per day

William La Follette- Hot mint tea, no caffeine, lemon honey and Brandy

Suzanne Kirby-Rousseau- Whiskey, lemon juice, honey, & rock candy

Tracy Lee- Brandy or Whiskey with lemon and honey

Denise Barlow- Brent Matsalla says some Rye Whiskey concoction

Xochitl Maiman- A shot of Scotch, not too smoky, with hot water

Marianne Vance-Radford- Said her dad use to have them drink the cheap, nasty Port

Christopher Samih Kiranbay- Benedictine and Brandy

Hollie Wogan- Whiskey and lemon

Jon Wells- Said I should combine some of the above suggestions

Loshel Robinson- Said it depends on what I have: Irish Whiskey for chest symptoms, Bourbon Whiskey for throat and nasal

Glenn Mitton- Old British remedy…Port & Brandy

William Gibson- Good Brandy, honey, lemon, & hot water. Does not do a thing for your cold – but you won’t care

Eileen McDonnell Gross- Single Malt Scotch, sniff it before you sip

Holly Holliday- Whiskey

Theodore Pruett- Jack Daniels, lemon, honey, & lemon zinger tea

Erin O’Mahoney McLaughlin- Black berry brandy

Paso Robles Cab Collective- 2 shots of Vodka with a squeeze of lemon or lime

Lowell John Zelinski- Since I drink so much Whiskey I don’t know – never had a cold.

So there you have it, some incredible advice. It was a fun conversation and if you actually go back and read through the thread it was quite entertaining too. Any additions that you would make to this list?? Cheers to avoiding the cold and flu peeps!
