A Typical Weekend in Paso Robles

September 6, 2013 matt 6 Comments

There’s always something going on in Paso Robles. For any of you that are familiar with this blog you’ve heard me say that time and time again…it’s true! It might be the opening of a new shop or restaurant, a wine industry party, a wine event, a new tasting room, or a car show but it’s rare to find a weekend with nothing to do.

In the last blog post I told you about our first visit to the brand new J. Dusi tasting room. That was one aspect of our Saturday, albeit a fantastic aspect, we did some other things that weekend as well. I thought I’d let you know what we happened across to show you a typical weekend in Paso Robles…for us.

After leaving J. Dusi we headed to downtown Paso because we wanted to grab lunch but we also knew the car show was in town. We cruised through the park to look around at all the cars and as usual, the collection was extremely impressive. I love that this little town has events like this that aren’t related to wine, it’s nice to have the change of pace.

When we were done looking at the cars we headed over to our favorite lunch spot, Pappy McGregor’s (it will always be The Kilt to us). Not only do we enjoy the food as well as the beer list (Annie seems happy with the wine there) but the view from the front patio is one of the best. You can sit there and people watch or watch the events happening in the park…in this case the car show.

While at lunch we had the opportunity to meet Pat (whom we know through this blog and had not met before) and her husband, which was a blast. It’s always fun to meet people that love Paso and are insane enough to read this blog…haha, kidding. Good times with them and hope to see you again!

Lunch was over and we head back to the car BUT had to stop in the new location in downtown Paso of the Brown Butter Cookie Company…only the best cookies that I’ve ever had. I figure I will be gaining some weight over the next few months due to them opening a store in Paso, it’s far too convenient.

So that was our Saturday…now on to Sunday.

We headed down to Barrelhouse Brewing to have a beer or two. This is still one of my favorite places. The people are super cool and the facility and property are awesome. I heard they just added a big sports package to their TV system there so now you can go watch the NFL…I’m sure you’ll see us there on random Sundays through the season.

Neither of us had been to First Crush Cellars, which is right across the way from BarrelHouse, so we headed over there to taste with Becky (owner). MCV Wines also pours in the First Crush facility so we tasted his wines as well. We tasted six wines:

First Crush 2011 Friends with benefits (50% Roussanne, 45% Pinot Grigio, 5% Sauvignon Blanc) $25.00

MCV 2011 Red (Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah) $18.00

First Crush 2010 Smooth operator (78% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec) $38.00

First Crush 2010 Fatal Attraction (50% Syrah, 50% Malbec) $38.00

MCV 2011 1105 (86% Petite Sirah, 9% Syrah, 5% Grenache) $36.00

MCV 2011 Rosewynn Vineyard Petite Sirah $36.00

It’s a cool little spot and I dig the cave style tasting room. It’s pretty cool having BarrelHouse and First Crush right there together because the brewery doesn’t serve wine and the winery doesn’t serve beer…good pairing. Be sure to check out the beer and the wine and let us know what you think!!

So that my friends…is a typical (sometimes) weekend for us in Paso Robles. Good times in paradise. And yes, even though we have no water here now…it’s still paradise!

There is so much going on in Paso that it causes over load. What to do and what to miss causes too much pain now. There are 10-15 functions every weekend that should be attended and so many that should not be missed that it is almost paralyzing. I responded this Sunday by getting down in my pond until just my eyes and nose were above water and waited for a zebra or antelope to come by for a drink of water. Dinner.

LOL…Gary, now that is a very unique way to handle the over load. I totally agree though, so much going on…some worth missing though, some very worthy of attending!! 🙂
