Wild Coyote

Paso Robles Wine: Wild Coyote Estate Winery

January 3, 2014 matt 3 Comments

We had not been to Wild Coyote in many years but recently decided to head over there to see our friend Sean and taste through the wines. If you haven’t been out there before it’s one of Paso’s unique properties for many reasons: the southwestern style architecture, it’s has a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom guest house vacation rental, as well as a B&B that includes five casitas. Not to mention that it’s in one of Paso’s most beautiful areas out on Adelaida Road.

As I’ve said about so many of the wineries in Paso, each one has its own unique thing to offer. It’s almost mandatory nowadays to offer more than just wine and I think Wild Coyote certainly offers that with the B&B and vacation rental. The last time we were there Sean had shown us one of the casitas and we thought it was awesome. It would be a great place to go stay if we wanted a little staycation.

The tasting room is much bigger now after a remodel they completed in the last year or so. It now has this large circle bar in the middle of the room which I’m a fan of. Due to its circle shape it feels much more social when tasting. Rather than standing beside people you end up being able to look at people and carry on conversation with other tasters. It makes it feel like more of a party than a business transaction.

The wines we tasted:

2012 Rose of Syrah – El Gringo ($25.00)

2011 Zinfandel – El Sancho ($25.00)

2010 Merlot – El Valiente ($25.00)

2010 Syrah – El Jefe (25.00)

2010 Blend – House of Reds – blend of Syrah, Merlot, & Zinfandel ($25.00)

2011 Mourvedre – El Capo ($50.00)

2011 Tempranillo – El Matador ($50.00)

2011 Tannat – El Macho ($50.00)

2011 Malbec – El Diablo ($50.00)

2010 Zinfandel Port – Little Fawn ($45.00)

I liked the wines overall…the Merlot, Mourvedre, Tempranillo, and Tannat were probably my favorite I’d say. I also enjoyed the winery itself, the tasting room is fun and they have cool merchandise for sale. The big windows in the tasting area are great (and open fully to allow the Paso breeze through) and of course, Sean is awesome. Our little bambino (Sammy) enjoyed it too…plenty of places to crawl around and be mischievous.

So what are you waiting for, pack yourself a damn picnic and get out there on the wine trail! Cheers and Happy New Year!!

Cheers Diane…we had not been there in probably 4 years. I was pleased with changes to the property along with the wines. Good times in Paso. 🙂
