We Olive? Yeah, We Do…Sometimes!

March 22, 2011 matt 6 Comments

While on our Wine Walk in downtown Paso Robles, we made a stop into a little shop called We Olive.  What’s that, you ask?  Well, it’s a shop that specializes in all things olive!  They’ve got everything from olive tapenade, to olive-based skin care, to olive oils.  The coolest thing is that you can do an olive oil tasting, and get an idea of the different kinds of oils and their flavor characteristics.

Olive oil tasting was similar to wine tasting, in that there are a lot of subtle, and not-so subtle flavors that show themselves in the oils.  Depending on what type of olive, where it was grown, and how the oil was made all make a big difference in the flavors.  Then you throw in the flavored oils and you’ve got an even broader bunch of tastes.  Some oils are more mellow and just slide down your throat, and some are more pungent and spark a tinge on your tongue.  You’ll get a little splash of oil in a cup to try, don’t be afraid.  They’ll also let you wander around the store and taste all kinds of treats, everything is open to sample!

Olive oil has numerous health benefits, including being packed with anti-oxidants and “good” cholesterols.  You can use olive oil to cook with, to dress salads, make marinades, dip breads, and just drizzle over pastas, vegetables, and meats for added flavor.

The folks at We Olive can guide you through your olive oil experience…they’re professionals, this is what they do!  Give it a try, we promise you won’t be disappointed!  We Olive Paso Robles is located a block off the downtown square on Park Street.  They’ve got more locations, so if you can’t make it to the Paso Robles shop, check their site for an olive oil experience near you!

I remember reading somewhere that some Italians believe a tablespoon of olive oil before an evening of drinking will help stave off a hangover!

Cute segment! I love the wine segments, but it’s fun to mix it up every once in a while with something different. Question: how much did you pay your friends for the endorsement? 🙂

Turns out doing some olive oil tasting in between wine tasting is a GOOD thing! Great place, good stuff to try! We don’t pay our friends for endorsements…we bribe them! 😉
