We love to socialize, and since we’ve been pregnant, that hasn’t changed much! Well, except the part where I can’t drink, but other than that we still get out and about quite a bit. As you might expect, the topic of conversation is often anything to do with pregnancy/baby/birth, etc. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the input, but it just seems like some people lose their sense of social boundaries when it comes to pregnant chicks. I wanted to share some of the comments, questions, and behavior that we’ve come across…we love it, so keep it comin!
Questions:
Q. Was this planned?
A. Umm, yes, and thank you for asking.
Q. Who’s the father? (mostly joking…I think)
A. We’re still waiting for the paternity test results…but we’re narrowing it down to 4 or 5. (Ask a stupid question….)
Q. How are you feeling?
A. I feel great!
Q. Are you going to find out what it is???
A. Yes, that’s just how we roll. Life has a lot of twists and turns and we like information when it’s available!
Q. What are you going to name it?
A. Something really good…we haven’t decided yet. Either that, or we’re just not really saying…(we like to be mysterious sometimes).
Comments:
– I LOVED/HATED being pregnant. (okay, now what do we talk about?)
– You should find out what it is! (yeah, thanks)
– You should NOT find out what it is! (yeah, thanks)
– Not to scare you, but when I was pregnant…(add in any bloody, painful, traumatic, emergency situation that you’d like here)
– OMG, giving birth is soooo painful! (yeah, I figured, but thanks for pointing that out)
– Well, once it’s here you can kiss sleep goodbye! (I’m sure we’ll survive, but thanks for the positive encouragement)
– Your life is never going to be the same! (yeah, cuz there’s gonna be a small child in our house that’s depending on us for its survival, we get it)
Behavior:
– Reaching out, over, through, under to rub my belly. (I don’t usually mind, but a little warning is nice).
– Sharing memories and experiences from their own life. (This is awesome, great to hear people reminisce and revel in the greatness of birth).
– Treating me like a princess, giving up chairs, carrying things for me, worrying over me. (As much as I appreciate the love and care, I’m still pretty capable of doing everything for myself, but I’m not going to give up the opportunity to use this for some help so keep it comin!)
The moral of the story that I’m taking away from all this is that people love to share their experiences with pregnant people. There’s just something magical and mysterious about being pregnant and people are drawn to that. It’s been an amazing trip so far and I’m enjoying every moment of it. I love the questions, comments, and behavior that my pregnant belly seems to bring out. It’s a pretty awesome study not only in human behavior, but in getting to know people better in a way that only the miracle of birth can inspire.

Prior to having a baby, I was an ignorant fool with some folks. One of the most stupidest comments I made was in my early twenties to a former employer. She was about nine months pregnant, and I was like, “Wow you are ready to drop.” I remember my manager looking at me in horror and later on she told me those comments are not polite to say to a pregnant women. Fast forward to when I was in my ninth month of pregnancy, my mate’s ex co-worker said to me, “Damn you are like really pregnant.” and a flood of laughter came to me because I remember the comment. And I told him that I used to make stupid comments like that too when I did not know any better. One of my parent mentors said to me and another dad to be, that we had to have patience while going through this phase of parenthood because there were going to be assholes giving unsolicited advise and making comments and we just had to pick and choose our battles. I remember two weeks before my due date, I stopped into a convinience to grab my only bag of chips I had eaten through out my pregnancy and the clerk gave unsolicited advice that I should not be eating them. I nearly knocked her block and told her that I eat better than her and most people and one bag of chips throughout my pregnancy was not going to hurt me or the baby. Thanks for sharing your insight.
@lucilla feliciano I appreciate the comment, great info! I think people just don’t always think about how their comments or behavior might come across. I’m pretty easy-going for the most part, and not easily offended, but when you mix the discomfort of carting around a bunch of extra bulk with the emotional hormonal pregnancy roller coaster that you’ve been riding for the last several months it’s easy to want to punch somebody when they say something stupid to you. And as far as that bag of chips goes, that reminds me of all the eating/drinking/exercise advice that I’ve been getting. It ranges from “now you know you can only gain XX amount of pounds, right???” to “are you SURE you should be exercising that much???” to “now’s your chance to eat whatever you want!!!”. It’s all about trusting your body and your own instincts and knowing that you’re building a strong baby YOUR way,andt people want nothing but the best for you. Cheers to happy babies!!!
