Obviously this first year with Sammy is full of lots of…well…firsts. Seems like a no brainer statement but due to the fact he was born in October it all came pretty damn quick. We brought him home from the hospital to a house we had just moved in to, then it was Halloween, my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Annie’s birthday, New Year’s Eve, and now New Year’s Day. It’s been an absolute whirlwind but I am so happy that we’ve been taking hundreds and hundreds of photos as well as filling his Facebook page and blogging about his, and our, adventures.
It has been very helpful for us to be able to go back through and look at all the photos, videos, and writings so we can relive and remember all these amazing times in his first two and a half months of life. As many of you know we have documented all of this in order to have the memories for ourselves but also to share with our family and friends that are spread out all over the U.S. and around the world. We don’t want to bore people with our lives or Sammy’s but I know so many of you have become close to us and to Sammy due to being there from the beginning…and we greatly appreciate that.
So what did Sammy do for New Year’s Eve?
Well, not much…he didn’t seem to care quite yet. All that aside, we headed over to a friend’s house that was having a kind of early kids New Year’s Eve friendly night. We had a great time and Sammy did pretty well, we got there around 4pm and left about 7 pm. The pre-Sammy Matt and Annie would have gone to another party after but we thought it best to get home and be safe and all that good stuff. The funny thing was…we had a really great time when we got home. Annie and I watched the New Year’s Eve activities on TV and drank some Veuve Clicquot.
At 9 pm, when the ball was dropping in New York, I went and grabbed Sammy out of his crib so the three of us could be together for his first New Year’s. We DID NOT do this at midnight our time because we are old and since we live on Sammy’s schedule we needed to sleep while he was. It’s going to be another cool memory for this new life we are living. When Annie and I were chatting last night I mentioned how most of the really cool memories that her and I share have nothing to do with a destination or completed goal, rather those cool memories involve the journey. It’s a great reminder that we need to slow down and enjoy the little moments even when they don’t seem quite as perfect as we may have liked them to be.
New Year’s Eve 2012 will go down as a wonderful memory for me even though I tend to want to be around a bunch of people partying until 2 am. As we start 2013 we sincerely wish you nothing but the best this year but remember, even when things don’t seem “the best”…fight through and realize that it is our reaction and response to things that dictate something be good or bad. I hope 2013 gets each of us a little bit closer to inner peace and to the realization that this life is all about choices. I also hope that each of you experiences the amazing sense of community, love, and support that Annie, Sammy, and I have felt…there has not been anything more powerful in my life to prove that human relationships are the most incredible and rewarding thing on this planet.
Cheers to a positive year and less negativity. Cheers to accomplishing goals. Cheers to new adventures and new experiences. Cheers to family and friends. Cheers to life and finding happiness in a truer form. Thank everyone…and Happy New Year from Sammy too! The adventure continues!!
