When Sammy was 4 to 6 months old we did two road trips. One to Monterey and the other to Palm Springs. He is now 16.5 months old and we had done no traveling with him since those two road trips until last week.
We made plans with my dad to drive up to Lincoln to visit them. So we left on Thursday and came home Sunday. On the way there we stopped twice for a total of 20ish minutes and the trip took 4.5 hours. On the way home we didn’??t stop at all and got home in 4 hours. He did great the whole way!
So why did we wait over a year to travel with Sammy?
I will answer for myself. Truth be told I was really nervous and I also fell into the rut of â??taking the easy way outâ?. Itâ??s just easier to sit at home with all that you need at your fingertips. I have a routine with Sammy and itâ??s just simpler maintaining that routine at home.
Here’??s what I learned from this experience:
I don’??t give Sammy enough credit for just how good he is.
I worry too much about what other people might think if Sammy makes a noise in public.
Traveling with kids is not easy but it is absolutely doable and manageable.
Traveling is an essential part of life. Sitting in a bubble forever just doesn’t work.
If you don’??t push yourself to do these types of things regret and resentment can set in. Typically that regret and resentment is directed at yourself.
It’??s nice that Annie and I can do this together, definitely easier with two adults rather than one.
And finally, it is mandatory that I travel on a more regular basis it helps keep me normal (whatever normal is).
So that’s it. Our third successful driving trip with Sammy but the first one in just over a year. Our next goal will be to get on a plane this year. We shall see how that goes. Cheers!
