I recently sat down with a gentleman in charge of marketing at a company and have to say, I was shocked yet not surprised all at the same time. Coming from a very traditional marketing background, he seemed completely unimpressed with any of the social media/ social commerce stuff happening all around him. The other thing that made my ears bleed is when he said that he only does things when the industry magazines say to start doing them, meaning that he did not want to be first to try something; which I am guessing is due to fear and lack of confidence.
So I walked away knowing these three things: 1) social media is here to stay (although it will continue to evolve and adapt to the market) 2) I would rather be first at something regardless of success or failure (don’t be afraid, try it and if it doesn’t work you adapt) and 3) just because someone is older than me and traditionally educated doesn’t mean they’re smarter than me.
