I continue to be baffled by people in SOCIAL media that have lost all memory that it is SOCIAL. We’ve seen some people in SOCIAL media that have grown quite large in popularity, to the point where they think they are ‘TOO BIG to fail’…I call bullshit.
Recently I’ve been reminded of this stupidity from yet another example on Twitter. A woman who currently has about 6,800 followers, has definitely made some strides in SOCIAL media for sure. I have known her for some time and had back and forth communications many times. In the past couple of weeks I have retweeted several of her tweets and even congratulated her for something that was kind of a big deal.
Guess what, no response. And I’ve seen a change in her behavior when she’s chatting with people, excuse me, AT people. Why does gaining in popularity online boost egos so much? I’ve written about this before and had numerous discussions online and offline about this phenomenon, and the take away for me is that online is no different than offline. People get caught up in the ‘limelight’, the growth they experience and attention they receive…then they let it go to their head.
Just as people can get greedy with power or money, I think they can get greedy with emotional capital.
I refuse to continue helping people that get that way, online and offline. There are no excuses: be real, be socially engaging, and respond to those that reach out to you (online and off). If you have too many followers to accomplish this you MUST do something different. Let your supporters know that you’re busy but at the same time work your ever lovin’ face off to respond!!
Come on people, listen to the words coming out of your mouth and make sure your actions back that up!!
