Where To Eat: McPhee’s Grill in Templeton, CA.

March 4, 2015 matt 9 Comments

Another favorite restaurant of mine is McPhee’s Grill in Templeton. Due to the fact that we live in Paso Robles and it’s easy to just drive downtown we don’t get to McPhee’s as much as we’d like BUT…we went there for our last date night.

I’ve been there for lunch and dinner before and I must say I prefer dinner. Not because of the menu, food, or service but due to the evening ambiance of McPhee’s. The dimly lit rooms of the restaurant just add so much to the experience.

As per our usual, we sat at the bar and proceeded to dive in. The bartender has waited on us before, he’s awesome, but I sadly do not know his name. We started with a beer for me and a glass of bubbles for Annie. Then came the lovely, warm, addictive bread.

We paused to enjoy all that sat before us along with the fact that we had a few hours away from Sammy. Next up was the Crispy Tempura Shrimp (spicy peanut sauce, asian slaw $18.00) and OH MY GOD (ßin the biblical sense), it was awesome. I’m a sucker for a good peanut sauce…apparently.

Believe it or not we only ordered one more dish and that was the flatbread pizza (R U Nuts – pistachio pesto, basil, Italian sausage, mozzarella, pecorino $15.00). Typically we do not have a stop button but this night we were able to slow down and enjoy rather than OVER indulge.  The pizza was absolutely glorious. I personally REALLY enjoyed the sausage that was on it as it was warmly embraced by the warm, gooey cheese. The crust was perfect and another glass of wine please.

As for wine, I had the house, which is by Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat). The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were both awesome. After Annie’s glass of bubbles she had a glass of the house Chard and then a glass of the Lincourt Chardonnay. All great!

So there you have it. Another fantastic spot on the Central Coast. I love McPhee’s and I will tell you right now, if we lived in Templeton we’d be there at least once per week (probably twice).

Have you been??

I’ve been eating Ian’s food for near 40 years and have never had anything he has prepared that wasn’t outstanding. If you haven’t eaten at McPhees you have missed one of the best meals the North County has to offer. And he’s cute too.

Andrew, absolutely. The first time I went there I think was 10 plus years ago. Always been a great spot.

I am obsessed with his artichoke. Plus they have really good, tasty wines.
