Chapel Hill, Jack Ranch Café, and Hearst Ranch Winery

July 6, 2016 matt Leave a Comment

We recently had another little adventure. This time we headed out to Chapel Hill in Shandon (east of Paso Robles) to do the hike up from the parking lot to the chapel. Annie and I have done this numerous times and absolutely love it. This was Sammy’s second or third time doing it. I’m impressed with the fact that he walks all the way and back down on his own.

Chapel Hill is a favorite because the hike and views are simply stunning. During the spring the rolling hills are lush and green but during this visit the hills were golden (sounds prettier than brown) but the vines that line the hike up were beautiful and green. You can see some of the shots I took in the slideshow below.

After hanging out for a while and taking in the serenity of that place we decided to jump in the Jeep and head further east to Jack Ranch Café. We’ve never eaten there was one reason to go and the fact that Hearst Ranch Winery has a second tasting room location in the café was another. You know us…food and wine, baby!

The stretch of HWY 46 East near the café is infamous because it’s where James Dean died in a car accident on September 30, 1955. You will see all kinds of Dean memorabilia for sale in the café. The café itself is nothing fancy. It’s an old school café/ diner feel but wow, we thought the food was good. It was simple but done right. Annie had a chicken burrito, I had the bacon cheeseburger, and Sammy got the kids cheeseburger.

I have no complaints. The food was good, the service was just fine, and that old diner vibe was pretty cool in my opinion. Annie went over into Hearst Ranch Winery and got a bottle of their Rose. We enjoyed a glass with lunch and took the rest home for later. All-in-all it was a fun day. Chapel Hill is good time (as usual) and doing something new like going to that café is always interesting.
