A Little Bit of Virginia in Paso Robles

March 16, 2011 matt 2 Comments

Our good Twitter buddy Dezel (@myvinespot and fellow wine blogger) was part of our Paso Robles/Virginia wine swap. We had the opportunity to sip on a Gadino Cellars 2009 Viognier out of Virginia.

Gadino Cellars Viognier

We tasted it at room temperature, which obviously would be different than serving it with a slight chill but that topic will have to be covered in another blog post.

On the nose we were getting some minerality and warm spice…it was quite nice. There is something about having wine at room temp, as much as we like our whites slightly chilled, room temp really opens up some other aromas. On the palate we got more minerality and some metallic flavors, that’s definitely not a bad thing. Not sure if that is a tie in to the minerality or something completely different.

We are very used to the Paso Robles (Central Coast, CA.) style Viogniers, so it is so nice to try wines from other regions. It is a great side by side test to see if you can pick up the differences…and those differences have to do with weather (heat, cold, rain, sun), terroir, and winemaking practices just to name a few.

Bottom line: The Gadino Cellars Viognier was quite nice and we look forward to trying more of their wines, definitely check them out!! Next, a big shout out to Dezel (@myvinespot), you rock man. Check out his wine blog at http://www.myvinespot.com

Cheers folks!!
