Veterans Day, Sammy, and Paso Robles

November 11, 2014 matt 9 Comments

IMG_8896I decided to take Sammy to the Paso Robles Downtown Park this morning to let him run around. We were greeted with dozens of American flags due to today being Veterans Day. Below are some photos from our time in the park but some highlights were:

~Seeing a group of four military men stopping at the plaque by the old water fountain which is for veterans from the Paso Robles area. They stopped, read it, removed their hats, appeared to have prayed, saluted, and then placed these three red flowers on the plaque. I am not sure what the red flowers mean, forgive me for that. I actually teared up watching them do this.

~A couple of people that are always at the park when I take Sammy and know him from that article that was in the SLO Tribune about the heart of stone around the tree, hollered and waved at Sammy. That always makes me chuckle. He’s Paso’s little mayor.

There you have it. Another day in the life.

Thank you to the veterans for doing what you do. No more words needed.

    Q. Why are red poppies worn on Veterans Day, and where can I obtain them?
    A. The wearing of poppies in honor of America’s war dead is traditionally done on Memorial Day, not Veterans Day. The practice of wearing of poppies takes its origin from the poem In Flanders Fields, written in 1915 by John McCrae. For information on how to obtain poppies for use on Memorial Day, contact a veterans service organization, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) or The American Legion, as a number of veterans organizations distribute poppies annually on Memorial Day. You can find veterans groups in the Veterans Service Organization link on VA’s Veterans Day web page. Veterans groups in your area can be found in your local phone book. Look in the yellow pages under “Veterans and Military Organizations” or a similar heading.

Thanks for that info, Heather. It was touching to see the four of them pay their respects.
