There’s this great little tasting room just off the downtown square of Paso Robles called Kiamie Wine Cellars. What Kiamie does is focus on crafting low volume, quality wines. They produce about 2500 cases annually of unique Bordeaux and Rhone blends. Kiamie’s winemaker is Steve Glossner, who is credited with working on some of the first Isosceles blends that came out of Justin Winery…which helped to put Paso Robles on to the California wine map.
When you step into their quaint tasting room on the corner of Riverside and 12th Avenue, you’ll get to spend some time tasting things like their “White Kuvee” which is a delicious blend of Roussanne and Viognier, and happens to sell out quickly…which is understandable! Kiamie’s “R Own” is their version of a GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre Rhone blend) with a twist of Zinfandel thrown in to add some smoke and depth. If Bourdeaux blends are your fancy, be sure to savor the “Meritage” which has Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec; rich and deep, yet fruity and balanced. One of their flagship wines is the “Kiamie Kuvee” that features Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Zinfandel, will likely knock your socks off!
Kiamie selects their fruit from different Paso Robles microclimates…each the perfect setting to achieve the properties that they’re looking for in their wine grapes. Their Bourdeaux varieties come mainly from the Adelaida region and much of their Rhones come from the 46 West area. Selecting fruit from different regions allows them to design blends that showcase the characteristics of each variety, blending them together to create a great wine! You’ll get to taste multiple vintages of some of these blends, showing you the differences in “terrior” from year to year; how different factors influence the flavors and style of the wine.
Be sure to stop in at Kiamie, you might get to chat with Sophia, the Tasting Room Manager, or Aram or Greg, owners…any of who will tell you their story and explain the very cool and unique style that Kiamie brings to the Paso Robles wine community!
