I came across this article last week on Twitter or Facebook and always find them interesting. The article calls them “off the beaten path” red varieties and when I posted on Facebook the response in the comments made me rethink some things.
We must take into account who we are talking about. Someone like me, and probably like you too since you’re reading this blog, are probably more into wine than the average consumer therefore have most likely tried each of these. On the other hand, the “average wine consumer” (which makes up a bulk of the wine buying public) has probably not tried all of these.
Taking that into account, I think these are off the beaten path red wine varieties. That said, how many have you tried?

Yes, count me as having tried them all! But I’m definitely a wine geek–closing in on 200 grape varietals that I’ve documented trying!

Wow, that’s awesome, David. 200!?!? I’d guess I’m somewhere around 100. I’m more of a lazy wine taster though…I don’t document as much as I should.
