We all remember growing up around that one kid, you know the one, the one who would cheat when playing Monopoly, or peek while counting during hide and seek. Remember that guy? Remember how it made you feel to play with that guy? I do! It pissed me off! Why would you ruin the spirit of the “game” by cheating the system just so you have a better chance of winning? I just remember thinking to myself “but why would you want to win by cheating???”. How rewarding could that be?
Okay, you can tell I’m a little bit passionate about this whole cheating thing, and I’ll admit that I’m no angel, but I’m definitely NOT a cheater! I have way too much self-punishment already built in to my psyche to add cheating to the list of things I beat myself up about! I think I’m also one of those naive people that assumes other people are like me; in other words, that us “grown-ups” don’t need to cheat anymore, right?
Wrong! I see it happening right in front of me at the CrossFit box! Maybe it’s not blatant, maybe it’s not every day, but it happens! The funny thing is, CrossFit workouts aren’t about beating other people, they’re about competing against yourself and always pushing limits and getting stronger and faster. Sure, we put our names and our times on the board each day after the workout, but it’s not about being first. It’s about finishing and doing your best and cheering each other on!
That cheating guy is the one who doesn’t do all the reps, or maybe just does them half-ass. He’s the guy that doesn’t run all the way to the marker, or maybe skips out on parts of the warm-up. What does any of that gain him? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Sure, maybe he had a faster time than he would have if he’d done the complete workout, but that’s a sucky way to get there. I want to have a faster time because I worked harder than I did last time!
Oh yeah, and by the way, we PAY to go workout and get results…why not get the most out of it that you can?
So, CHEERS to all of you hard workers, you workers that do ALL of the burpees each round, every box jump, and go the distance because you know it’s making you better and stronger each day! And BOO to the cheaters…you’re not winning anything, you’re just cheating yourself out of better results!
