We’ve all heard that garbage in garbage out thing, right? It’s a pretty simple concept; you can’t expect to get great results when you’re only willing to put in mediocre (or worse) effort. This is true for many things in life; relationships, work, education, our own self development, etc. How cool would it be though if you could just put the least amount required in and get optimal performance out? I know I would have had a lot more spare time in my life if that was the case! But the laws of the Universe, or Mother Nature, or some unseen force seem to all prevent that hopeful phenomena from happening.
But it’s Food, Not Garbage…Or Is It?
We’re just plain stuck with getting out what we put in. That goes for feeding ourselves, too! What is food after all? It’s fuel for our incredibly complex bodies to operate, right? It’s also become a medium for socializing, family gatherings, comfort, and even obsession. Why is that? Why does food seem to have so much power over some of us? Why can’t it just serve its purpose of fueling us and let us get on our merry ways, just like a quick stop at the gas station? It is what it is…food is more than just a filler’up these days and it’s our job to negotiate through the quagmire of garbage and crap that’s been made available to us.
That’s right, I said crap! As a culture, we’ve somehow managed to attach a whole bunch of emotion to our food while at the same time, producing a TON of crappy options. We want everything right NOW and we want it BIG and we want it EASY. What’s that leave us with? GARBAGE! It leaves us with a fabricated, concocted, facsimiles of what food should be. Things like McDonalds, KFC, frozen packaged dinners, strangely shaped, colored, and flavored nuggets and bits of unidentifiable things that we sit around consuming like we had good sense! What the HELL is going on around here??? Do you really think that those little blue, gelatinous, nubs shaped like dinosaurs are nourishing your kids? Or that huge cup of black bubbly chemical sugar juice is going to hydrate you and make you feel good?
You and I both know the answer…NO!!! Sure, I’ll give you a little bit of instant gratification from time to time when that stuff hits the spot, but in the long run there’s no way that eating chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors, flavors, and whatever-the-hell-else is in all that crap is going to make you feel anything but CRAPPY (garbage in, garbage out), right?
This is not where I segue into telling you that you should eat all green, fresh, organic, local, blah blah blah, but it IS where I tell you to WAKE UP!!! Stop putting so much crap into your body and then asking your Doctor for some quick cure for your chronic headaches. Stop pretending that consuming a literal shitload of crap isn’t going to have a long-term affect on your health, and stop complaining that you’re overweight, or that your skin keeps breaking out or that you’re tired all the time.
Take responsibility for what you put into your body. Educate yourself, use your brain! It’s not hard or time consuming, it’s absolutely necessary! Well, it’s necessary if you want to FEEL GOOD! If you don’t care about feeling good, then you should have stopped reading this back at the first paragraph. You deserve this…your body deserves this…your family deserves this!!!
I just don’t understand it…there are so many people in our society that are slowly but surely, and willingly killing themselves by closing their eyes and shoving their mouths full of crap that is anything but real, quality fuel for these beautiful and miraculous bodies that we live in. Again, I’m not saying that you have to become some sort of fanatical eater or anything, but just take a minute and think about what you’re consuming, and how it truly makes you feel. Could you feel better? Could you make different or better choices? Could you learn more about what you’re actually putting in your body? I’m pretty sure you can answer “YES” to all of these questions…I know I can! So, now the question is…what are YOU going to do?
